483 days to go! Mahama calls for peaceful change in 2024

The Leader of Ghana’s largest opposition political party, John Dramani Mahama has urged Ghanaians to choose democratic governance as the vehicle of selecting leaders for the country. In a Facebook post on Sunday, August 14, 2023, the former President intimated that “Constitutional governance is still best”. He added that “It allows us to peacefully change our leaders if we believe they are not working in the interest of the people!”

The comments of the NDC stalwarts comes in the wake of the growing spate of military takeovers in the west Arfica Sub region. The decision by the presidential guard in the Republic of Niger last month where the presidential guard seized power forcefully from the democratically elected president Mohammed Bazoum bring to a total number of 4 countries in West Africa experiencing military rule in the last 3 years.

Experts warn that there may be at least two more military takeovers in coastal West Africa, raising fears that Ghana’s track record of being the beacon of democracy for the African continent may be in danger. However John Mahama took the opportunity on social media to remind Ghanaians of the need to use the ballot box to change the leadership they are dissatisfied with.  “483 days to go for the verdict of the people” he said.
