District Level Elections: EC to announce new date

Director of Electoral Services, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, has said that the Electoral Commission (EC) would announce a new date for this year’s District Level Election.

This follows the cancellation of the election’s original date on October 3, 2023. However, the election management body is giving assurances that it will be able to meet the legally requires timeline of holding the local assembly polls by December of this year, when the 4-year tenure of existing assembly members would have elapsed.

According to Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, a panel will soon get together to approve a new date while adding that a revised election roadmap would also be announced by the EC before the end of next week.

In the meantime the Electoral Commission is expected to proceed with registration and exhibition of the voter register while efforts continue to re-arrange the main polls.

Data suggests that a minimum of 1.5 million eligible citizens who have turned 18 years between 2021 and 2023 are expected to be captured onto the register.

In recent years, The EC has proposed through a new Constitutional Instrument (CI) to eliminate the guarantor system but critics including the minority lawmakers argue that the alternative of relying on the Ghana National Identification Card will not yield a desirable outcome.

Many civil groups in the country also continue to push for a rise in women representation and inclusivity in both local-level and national elections in order to build up the country’s democratic credentials Out of 6,000 assembly members elected at the last election, only 245 women were directly elected.

It unclear if this year’s election will record a further rise in the figures.
